Hokkien Kuntao Mantis by Richard Elliott Martial Arts & Self-Defense

About Richard ElliottHi, I’m Richard Elliott, a dedicated practitioner and teacher of Hokkien Kuntao Mantis with over a decade of experience. My journey into martial arts began under the esteemed guidance of my father-in-law, Gerry Tann, who introduced Hokkien Kuntao Mantis to the UK in 1978. Inspired by his mastery, I immersed myself in this art at the age of 22, drawn by its unique blend of tradition and practicality.Hokkien Kuntao Mantis is a rich martial art that combines two branches: the dynamic Kun Tao and the intricate Northern Praying Mantis. The art traces its lineage to Indonesian and Chinese martial traditions, focusing on fluid movement, powerful forms, and effective self-defense strategies. Through years of training and refinement, I’ve worked to preserve these teachings while making them accessible to new generations.Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to perform at prestigious martial arts events, including demonstrations in London Chinatown and the Julian Dale Eagle Claw Kungfu School. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the art and allowed me to connect with renowned practitioners, such as Paul Whitrod of Kalarippayatt and Chow Gar Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu, and Phillip Davis of Kuntao Matjan. As a teacher, my focus is on empowering students to develop confidence, discipline, and practical self-defense skills through the art of Hokkien Kuntao Mantis.Whether you’re new to martial arts or looking to deepen your practice, my mission is to guide you on your journey with respect for tradition and a commitment to personal growth.Join me on this journey to explore the dynamic world of Kuntao Mantis. Let’s preserve and pass on these traditions together.
